Grassmoor Allotment Project (GAP)
The green fingered community of Grassmoor have revitalised an under utilised allotment with the help of local school children. Funded by Derbyshire County Council, and North East Derbyshire District Council, the gardeners set out to deliver a project that would bring the community together and teach people about the benefits of living a healthy lifestyle. Since April 2008, pupils from Grassmoor School have been out and about at the local allotment, working with members of the Allotment Society to preserve the history of the site. Everyone has worked to rejuvenate the allotment and learn about healthy living. Due to the success and popularity of the project, it will continue to be delivered as part of the curriculum for the 2009 academic year.
"The success of the project is down to the prodigious amount of in-kind funding that has come through staff time," says Gill Clarke, Intergenerational Project manager for Derbyshire County Council. "It has been fantastic to see new friendships developing in the community over the enjoyment of gardening." |
